I can’t believe we made it out of January! And Happy Groundhog Day!!

In all seriousness, hasn’t every day since like March 2020 felt like you were trapped in the movie Groundhog Day? I know for most of us it sure has felt that way. I went to remote work for my full time job on March 18th. I’ve since gone back into the office back in June. However, that time between March and June was brutal.

While I am a Taurus, and love my routine, it felt like I was stuck in the same day over and over. I’m not going to lie, it started to get to me and affected my mental and emotional health. In addition to all of that, my marriage was dissolving before my eyes. I resorted to comfort eating, gave up on exercise, and binged watch true crime tv while checking work emails on the couch. Most days, I didn’t even change out of my pjs or take a shower.

When my ex and I decided to split back at the end of April, and I moved into the guest room, I decided that it was time to stop wallowing in self pity. I’ve since seen so many people complaining about being stuck at home, feeling anxious, and generally feeling bad about the state they are in. And it’s OK to NOT be OK! We are all doing the best with the state of our world right now.

However, for me, I decided that I could choose how I reacted to what was happening in my life. I could sink deeper into depression brought on by COVID, the dissolution of my marriage, the social injustices happening in the world, and so much more…or I could make an active decision to get up, get dressed, and make the most of each day!

I found an apartment, moved out on my own, and started attending church regularly. I reconnected to my yoga, mediation, and Pilates practices to once again establish a connection to my body. I began to choose foods that nourished my body instead of fed my emotions. I rediscovered my faith and decided that I had to be grateful and make the most of each day that I was fortunate enough to have been given.

I know it is not an easy transition to make! However, I want to share a few tips that have helped me. Hopefully, at least one of these tips will resonate with you and help you to break up the montony of the day so you can truly live more joyfully!

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalms 118:24

13 Tips to Make the Most of Each Day

  1. Wake up early and catch the sunrise – this is one that I try to do everyday. Nothing bring a smile to my face like watching a sunrise or a sunset. It shows that we have so much to be grateful for.
  2. Do something to start the day that wakes up your soul – yoga, meditate, or journal.
  3. Read something positive to start your day – I read bible verses every morning and then journal in my gratitude and bible journals. Even something like repeating a few affirmations will help you to get in the right frame of mind to take on the day ahead with a positive mindset and a grateful heart.
  4. Set a new goal for the day and take steps toward achieving it.
  5. Get out of your PJs – nothing feels better than getting up early, taking a shower, getting dressed in a cute outfit and taking on the day! Even if you don’t leave the house, you will feel so better if you get dressed.
  6. Express your love – Reach out to someone who you have not talked to in awhile and express your love and gratitude for them. Tell them you love and miss them!
  7. Tackle your to do (or honey do) list – pick one thing that has been on your to do list for awhile and check it off! Even if it is only one small task, you will better for ticking that one off your list!
  8. Exercise! – I can’t say this one enough. Get off the couch and move your body. Go for a walk! Or better yet, try one of my yoga and Pilates videos – link here.
  9. Follow your passion – take one step towards your passion and doing something you love! Want to write a book? Sit down and create an outline. Want to learn to draw? Get out paper and pen and start sketching.
  10. Take a social media break – sometimes social media can actually bring us down. So turn off the phone for a day, sign off of the computer, and take a mental break from the online world to live in the real life world before you.
  11. Watch your favorite movie – this always uplifts my mood. Pick a favorite movie, or two, that you haven’t watched in awhile!
  12. Create a JOY list! – I have a joy list, which is a list of things that bring me joy. Whenever I’m feeling down and need a mood buster, I turn to that list and do one thing on it. Some things on my JOY list include: read a book, take a nap, go for a walk in nature, meditate, express gratitude, dance like no one is watching, and serve others.
  13. Eat only nourishing food – I don’t know about you but when my emotions are taking over, I always resort to comfort foods. I tend to binge on sugary sweets to self soothe my emotions. However, it only winds up making me feel worse, not better. Instead turn to some food options that actually nourish your body, such as fruits and vegetables.

I hope these tips help you out as much as they have worked for me. These have helped me to be grateful for the day that I have been given and remind me to make the most of each day. If you have any tips that help you make the most of your day, drop them in the comments!
