Review: Herbivore Prism Exfoliating Glow Serum

We might as well continue on in the Herbivore Botanicals love. When I started my transition to a more clean skincare routine, Herbivore came up time and time again. I started with their Bakuchiol Retinol Alterantive Serum, which I just reviewed here. When I saw that they released the new Prism Exfoliating Glow Serum, I had to try that one out as well.

I’m a huge fan of using chemical exfoliants which I mentioned in my Skincare 101: The Ultimate Guide to Exfoliating post. The Herbivore Prism Serum has a cocktail of chemical exfoliants including lactic acid, glycolic acid and salicyclic acid. While glycolic doesn’t work well for my dry and sensitive skin, I decided to try this one out anyway.

What They Say:

Prism is a powerful exfoliating blend of 12 percent AHAs and three percent BHA. It helps to reveal smoother and more glowing skin. Prism Exfoliating Glow Serum leaves skin exfoliated, smooth, and glowing thanks to a rainbow of 100 percent natural fruit and plant-based AHAs including lactic, glycolic, and malic acids plus a concentration of natural willow bark BHA, and vitamin c from Kakadu plum extract.

This serum is great for all skin types and helps to minimize pores, reduce the appearance of hyper-pigmentation, refine skin texture and improve skin tone.

My REview:

First, I have to say that this serum is getting a lot of flack in the beauty community. Certain people online think something only works if it was created in a lab *insert eye roll*, while I think certain synthetic ingredients are beneficial the same can be said for those derived from nature as well. The opposite can also be true, not everything in nature is going to work well. I mean lets just take a look at poison ivy. In my opinion, if something works, it works.

The texture of this serum is very light and readily absorbs into the skin, similar to the Bakuchiol serum. I love the texture because it lets me continue on in my skincare routine before bed.

I was nervous about the glycolic in this because I every time I use a glycolic I break out like crazy. The 12% AHAs are derived from Bilberry Lactic Acid, Sugar Glycolic, and Malic Acids. While the BHA is from Willowbark Extract. I’m happy to say that I had no irritation from this product at all. In fact there was no tingling or itchiness at all. Now, for some people they don’t think a chemical exfoliant is working unless it’s burning and peeling their skin off. However, you can get a great exfoliation without using something so harsh.

Overall, I defintely noticed smoother and brighter skin in the morning after using this. I recommend using this maybe once or twice a week. I like to use chemical exfoliants at night because it’s just easy. I do want to mention that if you are using this in conjunction with Bakuchiol or another retinol product like I am, there are a few ways you can go about this. This was actually brought up on a recent Herbivore post.

I use Bakuchiol every night (although you can use it both morning and night) and on the nights I use Prism, I just skip Bakuchiol. You can also use Bakuchiol in the morning and Prism on the same night.

As always, make sure you are regularly using sunscreen to protect your skin the following day (and every day). To hear more of my thoughts on the Prism Exfoliating Glow Serum, check out the video below.
