If you have watched any of my YouTube videos or read any of my other posts here on the blog, you will know that I’m a HUGE fan of facial oils. I typically have dry, sensitive skin and am prone to eczema break outs, so keeping my skin well hydrated and protected is essential for great looking skin.
Squalane seems to be the hot new beauty trend right now and many companies are jumping on the bandwagon and adding this ingredient into their beauty products. But what is Squalane/Squalene and how can it help your skin? And what is Amaranth Oil and how is it different from Squalane/Squalene?
Squalene is naturally produced in our bodies. It is a type of sebum that helps to lubricate and protect our skin, but as we age the amount produced begins to decrease. This leaves our skin feeling more dried out over time.
Squalane (with two As) is a more stabilized version of Squalene and that is the ingredient we see used most in beauty products today. Traditionally sourced from shark livers, there are now plant based options that are a cruelty free form of Squalene, including Amaranth Oil.
Amaranth Oil is a cold pressed vegetable oil derived from the Amaranth Grain. Not only does it help to save the sharks but it can help save your skin and your health. Amaranth Oil is high in Vitamin E and is one of the highest sources of plant based Squalane.
Not only is it great for your skin, but it also has amazing health benefits. Amaranth Oil has been shown to help with inflammation, reducing blood pressure and decreasing the risk of developing cancer cells.
Amaranth Oil can be taken orally such as using the oil in foods, as a salad dressing for instance. It can also be used on the skin topically and used with other beauty products to help hydrate and protect your skin.
Benefits of Amaranth Oil for Skin

5 AM Amaranth Face & Body Oil
When the owner of 5AM Provisions contacted me about trying and reviewing their Face & Body Oil, I of course said “Yes!” I’m a huge face oil fan and am always looking for one that works well for my skin. I’ve found some amazing ones over the years and have also come across some duds. I do want to mention that this post is not sponsored but I did receive the product for free to try and review.
What They Say
A perfectly portable version of 5AM’s best-selling amaranth oil.
Amaranth oil: rich in squalene, Vitamin E, and essential fatty acids for a firmer, brighter, and smoother skin. Amaranth oil helps to promote active skin recovery and rejuvenates while providing maximum hydration.
Our amaranth oil to-go bottle is 100% pure, organic, cold-pressed amaranth oil. So even though it says face and body, you are able to orally ingest it. It is exactly the same oil as our large bottle. The packaging is simply tailored to our beauty friends who use it as a face and body oil, making it much more convenient.
One of my go to facial oils is Argan Oil, while it is light in texture it does tend to sit on the skin for a longer time. I usually apply the Argan Oil at night a few hours before bed to allow for time for it to absorb.
One of the things that I loved about the 5 AM Amaranth Oil is it’s texture. It has a very thick texture that feels super emollient when applied to the skin, but it does absorb quicker than my Argan Oil. It has a light but pleasant scent and is a rich golden color.
Upon initial application there is a slight tacky feel to the skin but that goes away quickly as the product is absorbed into the skin. I like to use the oil at night as part of my bedtime ritual. Massaging the oil into the skin for a few minutes is such a pampering treat for my skin and peace of mind. I love that it absorbs quickly, so I can fall asleep without worrying about it transferring to my bed linens.
In the morning my skin feels well hydrated and has an amazing and radiant glow. This has been fabulous at helping to reduce any eczema flare ups I might have. I may notice a patch of eczema on my face about to flare up but when I apply this at night, by the morning my skin is clear and glowing. It has been a life saver as far as keeping my skin from having any flare ups.
I am so in love with this product, that it has replaced any other facial oils that I use. I will definitely keep this in my skincare arsenal going forward. If you want to learn more about Amaranth Oil and hear more about how much I love it, check out my review video below.
